Stroke Recovery Treatment

Integrative Chinese & Western Medicine for Stroke and Post-Stroke Recovery

Early Treatment Matters — Restore Function, Improve Quality of Life

Stroke is one of the leading health conditions affecting older adults worldwide. Many patients experience long-term complications after a stroke, including:

  • Weakness or paralysis on one side of the body
  • Difficulty speaking or swallowing
  • Numbness and dizziness
  • Memory decline and fatigue
  • Chronic fatigue and reduced mobility

These complications can seriously impact a patient's independence, emotional well-being, and overall quality of life.

However, increasing clinical experience and modern research show that:

Stroke recovery is possible — but timing, comprehensive, and professional treatment is essential.

At Guodong Zhang Clinic Official Website, Drongong Zhang, Ph. Dr. Guodong Zhang has long specialized in integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine approaches for stroke and post-stroke recovery, helping many patients improve function, mobility, and overall wellness.

Dr. Guodong Zhang's Professional Background

Dr. Guodong Zhang graduated from Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a leading institution in traditional Chinese medicine education and research.

He was a master's and doctoral student of Shi Xue Minzh, one of China's most respected pioneers in modern acupuncture medicine.

Academician Shi Xuemin is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking contributions to stroke treatment through the innovative “Xing Nao Kai Qiao ” , which helped advance modern acupuncture therapy for neurological disorders and recovery in stroke rehabilitation and neurological research. His work significantly influenced the modernization and international development of acupuncture treatment for neurological disorders.

As a direct disciple and doctoral trainee under Academician Shi Xuemin, Dr. Guodong Zhang inherited the academician's clinical philosophy and extensive experience in stroke rehabilitation. Over many years of clinical practice, he further integrated modern medical knowledge with traditional Chinese medicine to develop a comprehensive integrated treatment system for stroke and post-stroke conditions.

Why Early Stroke Treatment Is Critical

After a stroke, brain cells begin to become damaged rapidly. The earlier treatment begins, the greater the chance of functional recovery.

Many patients mistakenly believe:

  • “Recovery will happen naturally over time”
  • “Older patients cannot improve”
  • “Paralysis is permanent”

In fact:

There are “Golden Recovery Periods” after stroke

Especially within:

  • The first few hours to weeks after stroke
  • The first three months of recovery
  • The first six months with continuous treatment

These are the most important times for nerve and function recovery.

Early comprehensive treatment may include:

  • Modern emergency and medical management
  • Acupuncture therapy
  • Herbal medicine support
  • Rehabilitation and physical therapy
  • Blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol management

This combined approach can significantlyly the potential for recovery.

Benefits of Integrative Chinese & Western Medicine for Stroke Recovery

Modern medicine plays a vital role in:

  • Acute emergency care
  • Brain and vascular evaluation
  • Medication management
  • Prevention of recurrent stroke

Traditional Chinese medicine, especially acupuncture and herbal therapy, may help improve:

  • Mobility and mobility
  • Weakness and numbness
  • Speech and swallowing difficulties
  • Sleep and emotional balance
  • Long-term energy and wellness

Dr. Guodong Zhang believes:

Stroke recovery should not rely on only one approach.
Integrating Western and Chinese medicine often provides better long-term results and quality of life.

Many patients receiving integrated care have experienced improvements in:

  • Walking and balance
  • Arm and mobility
  • Speech and communication
  • Independent daily living activities
  • Overall wellness and confidence

Personalized Comprehensive Treatment Plans

Every stroke patient is different.
At Guodong Zhang Clinic, treatment plans are personalizedized based on each patient's condition and needs.

Treatment may include:

✅ Stroke and post-stroke function evaluation
✅ Personalized acupuncture treatment
✅ Traditional herbal medicine therapy
✅ Diabetes, hypertension, and chronic disease management
✅ Rehabilitation and lifestyle guidance
✅ Long-term wellness and prevention strategies

The goal is not only to treat symptoms but to help restore overall health and quality of life.

Don’t Wait — Time Matters

Many patients lose valuable recovery opportunities by delaying treatment.

If you or a loved one are experiencing:

  • Slow recovery after stroke
  • Weakness or paralysis
  • Facial paralysis
  • Speech difficulties
  • Numbness or walking difficulties
  • Chronic fatigue after stroke

Early evaluation and treatment are strongly recommended.

Xingnao Kaiqiao Acupuncture Method

Two graduates in black and red gowns standing indoors.

Xingnao Kaiqiao acupuncture method

The Xingnao Kaiqiao acupuncture method is a specialized acupuncture system developed by Shi Xuemin, a renowned Chinese acupuncture physician and academician. It was originally designed for the treatment and rehabilitation of stroke (cerebrovascular disease) and later expanded to other neurological disorders.

The name can be translated as:

  • Xingnao (醒脑) = awaken the brain
  • Kaiqiao (开窍) = open the sensory orifices / restore consciousness

The therapy emphasizes restoring brain function and consciousness rather than only treating muscles or meridians locally.

1. Core Theory

Traditional acupuncture often focuses on:

  • regulating meridians,
  • balancing Qi and blood,
  • relieving pain.

The Xingnao Kaiqiao method instead centers on:

“The brain governs the spirit and consciousness.”

According to its theory:

  • Stroke causes “closure of the orifices” and dysfunction of the spirit/consciousness.
  • Treatment should first “awaken the brain,” then restore motor and neurological function.

Thus, this method strongly emphasizes:

  • neurological regulation,
  • central nervous system stimulation,
  • recovery of consciousness and motor control.

2. Main Clinical Indications

A. Stroke Rehabilitation

Most commonly used for:

  • ischemic stroke,
  • hemorrhagic stroke,
  • post-stroke sequelae.

Symptoms treated include:

  • hemiplegia,
  • paralysis,
  • speech disorders (aphasia),
  • dysphagia (swallowing difficulty),
  • facial paralysis,
  • spasticity,
  • cognitive dysfunction.

B. Disorders of Consciousness

Sometimes used for:

  • coma,
  • traumatic brain injury,
  • post-anoxic brain injury.

C. Other Neurological Disorders

Some hospitals also apply it to:

  • Parkinson's disease
  • spinal cord injury,
  • facial nerve palsy,
  • dementia.

However, evidence for these conditions is less established than for stroke rehabilitation.

3. Major Acupoints Used

The system uses a standardized combination of primary and secondary acupoints.

(1) Neiguan (PC6)

Located on the inner forearm.

Functions:

  • calms the mind,
  • regulates autonomic nervous function,
  • may improve cerebral circulation.

Usually needled bilaterally.

(2) Renzhong / Shuigou (GV26)

Located in the philtrum (between nose and upper lip).

This is one of the signature points of the method.

Functions:

  • restores consciousness,
  • “opens the orifices,”
  • stimulates the central nervous system.

Technique:

  • rapid pecking manipulation (“sparrow-pecking technique”).

(3) Sanyinjiao (SP6)

Located above the medial ankle.

Functions:

  • improves lower-limb motor recovery,
  • regulates liver, spleen, and kidney functions in TCM theory.

(4) Jiquan (HT1)

Located in the axilla (armpit area).

Used for:

  • upper-limb paralysis,
  • shoulder movement dysfunction.

(5) Weizhong (BL40)

Located behind the knee.

Used for:

  • lower-limb spasticity,
  • muscle hypertonicity.

(6) Chize (LU5)

Located near the elbow crease.

Used for:

  • upper-limb spasticity,
  • flexor muscle tightness.

4. Needle Manipulation Characteristics

A defining feature of this method is:

strong stimulation and specific manipulation techniques.

This differs from gentler acupuncture styles.

Common Techniques

Sparrow-Pecking Technique

Rapid vertical lifting and thrusting.

Commonly used at:

  • GV26 (Renzhong).

Purpose:

  • intense stimulation of the nervous system.

Lifting-Thrusting and Twirling

The practitioner manipulates the needle repeatedly to induce:

  • soreness,
  • numbness,
  • heaviness,
  • radiating sensation.

In TCM this is called obtaining “Deqi”.

5. Treatment Process

Acute Stroke Phase

After stabilization:

  • acupuncture may begin early,
  • often once or twice daily,
  • combined with modern medical stroke management.

Rehabilitation Phase

Typically:

  • 5–6 sessions weekly,
  • lasting weeks to months.

Usually combined with:

  • physical therapy,
  • speech therapy,
  • occupational therapy,
  • rehabilitation training.

6. Differences from Conventional Acupuncture

 Conventional Acupuncture:

Focus on meridians,Often local treatment,Usually gentler stimulation,Broad chronic disease use,Highly individualized.

Xingnao Kaiqiao Method:

Focus on brain/spirit regulation,Central neurological regulation,Stronger stimulation,Primarily neurological disorders,More standardized protocols .

7. Modern Medical Research

Some clinical studies suggest possible benefits in:

  • motor recovery after stroke,
  • gait improvement,
  • reduction of spasticity,
  • swallowing recovery.

Researchers propose mechanisms such as:

  • improved cerebral blood flow,
  • neuroplasticity modulation,
  • anti-inflammatory effects,
  • neural network activation.

Guodong Zhang Clinic

Two graduates in black and red gowns standing indoors.
